1967년 터키 출생. MIT 경제학과 교수. 런던정경대(LSE)에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 정치경제학, 개발경제학, 경제성장, 테크놀로지, 소득불균형, 노동경제학 등 전방위적인 연구를 진행하고 있다. 최근에는 '제도가 경제 발전에 어떤 역할을 하는가'에 관심이 많다. 2005년, 경제학적 사고와 지식에 가장 크게 기여한 40세 미만의 경제학자에게 수여되는 존 베이츠 클라크 메달(John Bates Clark Medal)을 받았다. 이 상은 '예비 노벨 경제학상'이라고 불리며, 1970년 노벨 경제학상을 수상한 폴 새뮤얼슨 역시 1947년에 이 상을 받은 바 있다.
