〈Opening words〉
A disciple asked, “In the section ‘An Agenda for Gratitude to Parents’ it says, ‘We should follow without exception the essential Way of practice and the essential Way of human life.’ How can doing so be showing gratitude to parents?” The Founding Master said, “Once you carry out the essential Way of practice, you will attain the Buddha’s knowledge; once you follow the essential Way of life, you will attain the Buddha’s actual practice. As a child of your parents, if you accomplish the Buddha’s work by attaining his knowledge and practice, then your honorable name will spread throughout the world, which will naturally cause the grace of your parents to be known. Once this occurs, then, thanks to their offspring, the parents’ good name will spread forever throughout all time, becoming an object of respect for myriad people. How can this be compared to caring for one’s parents just for the short period of their lives? Therefore, this actually becomes a Way to show unsurpassed gratitude.”
The disciple then asked, “We are taught to ‘protect to the best of our abilities the helpless parents of others, as if they were our own.’ How can this be showing gratitude to our parents?” The Founding Master said, “According to the principle of rebirth that the Buddha of the past taught, throughout many thousands of kalpas in both past and future, there actually are countless numbers of parents who have been, or who will be, designated for us. How can we say that we have requited this tremendous amount of gratitude we owe to these many parents when we show it only to the one or two parents of our present life? Therefore, whether our current parents are still alive or whether they have already passed away, if we do our best to protect the helpless parents of others, this then will be showing great gratitude to all our parents of the past, present, and future.”

Chapter Six: Doubts Clarified 25
My motivation to renounce the secular life to become a Buddhist minister was to repay the gratitude of all my parents and ancestors for the triple world. In order to fulfill my filial duty to the parents whom I had chosen in countless past lives, to the parents of this life, Hwang Ho-bong who is my father and Kim Bu-sun who is my mother, and to the parents I will choose in the future, I have decided to dedicate my body and mind to the Buddha in this life. So, when my father passed away at the age of 53 in 1979, I renounced the world without any regrets and transferred to Wonkwang University to become Kyomu (clergy of Won-Buddhism) as a third-year student.
After ordination for clergy of Won-Buddhism, I served at Yeongsan Holy place of Won-Buddhism, Wonkwang University, as vice superintendent of the lady’s dormitory for pre-clergy of Won-Buddhism, Suseong Temple and Won-Buddhism Graduate School. I suffered a stroke and underwent major surgery while working in Won-Buddhism Graduate School. After two years of recuperation, I h...ad the opportunity to make a pilgrimage to India. In Kushnagara, which is the place of Buddha's nirvana, a visionary past life came to my mind during meditation. Through this special experience, I vowed to live to repay the grace of all triple worlds of all Buddha and saints, as well as the triple worlds of all ancestors. Since then, I have been working at the Hawaii International Training Center for 12 years through the Bangbae Temple and Seo Jinju Temple.

법호 라타원(羅陀圓). ‘여성의 몸으로 성불하리라’는 화두로 평생을 살아온 저자는 1954(원기 39)년 정읍에서 출생하여 동국대 불교학과를 졸업하고, 원광대 원불교학과 학사 편입 한 후 1982(원기 67)년 출가했다. 영산선원, 원광대학교 교학대 기숙사, 대구 수성교당, 원불교 대학원대학교, 서진주교당, 방배교당에서 근무하고 2009년 미국으로 와서 하와이국제훈련원에서 육도 윤회에 대하 깊은 성찰을 통해 일체 생령들과 교감하며 행복한 마음 공부를 하고 있다.
