Nam June Paik viewed media not as tools, but as the fundamental social structure where culture was formed. This is a media ecological perspective that focuses on ¡®media as media.¡¯ At that time, TV was at the center of domestic life and leisure as the platform of pop culture and the medium of ideology. Paik transformed TV into the medium and object of art, and conducted performative events. By doing so, he challenged traditional visual art and brought media technologies, which were grounds for daily lives, to the front as figures or contents. This was how Paik raised questions about the role of technology. He pointed out that telephones were not studied much despite their impact on daily lives, and stressed it was necessary to pay attention to the telephone as the ground or context of everyday lives. ¡°Media determine our situation¡±(Kittler, 1999). This short sentence by Friedrich Kittler sums up the history of debates surrounding the relationship between man and the media. (¡¦) Kittler¡¯s objection was the dichotomy of science and humanities or spirit and nature. This duality was prevalent in German academic societies in Kittler¡¯s time and is no strange idea in today¡¯s Korea, too. He is opposed both to the assumptions that humanities have no bearing on calculations and machines, and that the latter will deprive man of his soul. Paik directly linked the second group, that is to say the development of video culture, with energy independence and environmental preservation, as it would lower the import of crude oil into the US. He predicted this group would determine the wealth of individuals and countries in the long term. He even argued people would go on business trips for meetings by car less and less thanks to the development of media such as fax and television, leading to energy saving. He foresaw that video cassettes would diversify culture, and cable TV and video telephones would reduce pollution and serve as the best solution to the crisis of ecosystem.
