이더리움의 창시자. 암호화폐 분야에서 세계적인 영향력을 지닌 프로그래머이기도 하다. 1994년 러시아에서 태어났다. 컴퓨터공학자인 부모를 따라 1999년 캐나다로 이민했다. 블록체인에 대한 관심을 바탕으로 고등학생이었던 2011년 『비트코인 매거진』을 발간했으며 2013년 백서를 통해 이더리움을 처음 공개했다. 2014년 마이애미 콘퍼런스를 통해 이더리움을 공식 소개했으며 2015년 정식으로 이더리움 플랫폼을 론칭했다. 비트코인과 달리 이더리움에는 스마트 컨트랙트를 기반으로 다양한 거래와 투표에 이르기까지 여러 계약을 탈중앙화 시스템을 통해 이용할 수 있도록 애플리케이션을 통한 확장성을 제공한다. 이런 높은 활용성과 범용성 덕분에 이더리움을 기반으로 한 다양한 토큰도 속속 개발되는 중이다. 또한 최근 이더리움 2.0을 공개해 대중화에도 노력하고 있다. 『포춘』에서 선정한 30세 이하의 30인(30 Under 30)에 선정되었고, 2021년 『타임』에서 세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 인물 100명에 선정되었다.
