애니메이션 영화 감독. 1941년 도쿄 출생. 1963년 가쿠슈인대학 정치경제학부 졸업 후, 도에이동화(현 도에이 애니메이션) 입사. 1985년에 스튜디오 지브리 설립에 참가. 대표작은 〈바람계곡의 나우시카〉(1984), 〈천공의 성 라퓨타〉(1986), 〈이웃집 토토로〉(1988), 〈모노노케 히메〉(1997), 〈센과 치히로의 행방불명〉(2001), 〈하울의 움직이는 성〉(2004), 〈벼랑 위의 포뇨〉(2008) 등. 2013년 7월에 〈바람이 분다〉가 공개되었다. 〈센과 치히로의 행방불명〉으로 제52회 베를린국제영화제 금곰상, 제75회 아카데미상 장편애니메이션영화상을 받았고, 제62회 베니스국제영화제에서는 영예금사자상을 수상. 2012년 문화공로자에 선출되었다. 2014년 11월 미국영화예술과학아카데미에서 아카데미공로상을 수상했다. 또 2001년에 개관한 미카타의 숲 지브리 미술관에서는 기획원안과 프로듀스를 맡으며 관주로도 일하고 있다.
