세계적인 SF 작가로 2015년 장편소설 『삼체』로 세계 최고 권위의 SF 문학상인 ‘휴고상’을 수상했으며, 등단 이래로 중국 SF 문학상인 ‘은하상’을 아홉 차례, ‘성운상’을 두 차례 수상했다. 류츠신은 1963년 6월 중국 베이징에서 태어나 산시성에서 성장했다. 1988년 화베이수리수력원을 졸업하고, 지금까지 발전소에서 컴퓨터 엔지니어로 일하고 있다. 그는 깊은 산속이라 일찍 해가 지는 근무지에서 기숙사 생활의 무료함을 달래기 위해 소설을 쓰기 시작했다고 한다. 풍부한 과학 지식을 바탕으로 엔지니어 특유의 구체적이고 섬세한 묘사 덕분에 “과학 기술과 상상력이라는 날개를 달고 하늘 높이 날아오르는 작가”라는 평을 받는다. 그는 현대사에 대한 깊은 성찰을 바탕으로 근미래 사회를 묘사함으로써 SF의 지평을 넓혀 가고 있으며 교사, 대학생, 이주 노동자, 엔지니어 등 주변에서 흔히 접할 수 있는 인물을 주인공으로 내세워 자연스럽게 독자의 공감을 끌어낸다. 우주의 신비 못지않게 우리 주변에 있는 노동자·약자·소수자의 세계도 신비로운 매력을 지니고 있다고 말하는 그는 역시 컴퓨터 엔지니어인 아내와 함께 발전소에서 근무하며, 매일 밤 SF를 쓰고 있다. 1999년 단편 「고래의 노래」를 발표하며 작품 활동을 시작했고, 지금까지 수많은 작품을 선보이며 활발히 활동하고 있다. 주요 작품으로는 아이들만 살아남은 지구를 그린 『초신성 시대』, 시골 교사가 아무도 모르게 지구 멸망을 막아 내는 「향촌 교사」, 가난한 창문 닦이가 별안간 우주 공간으로 떨어지면서 일어나는 사건을 다룬 「중국 태양」 등이 있다. 2019년 초 개봉한 SF 블록버스터 <유랑지구>는 그의 동명 소설이 원작이며, 중국 대입 시험에 그의 소설이 지문으로 출제되기도 했다.
