After returning to Korea in 2019 for the first time since the 1980 Uprising, the author was shocked to discover that many people he talked to were not aware of the truth of these horrendous events. Some thought it was a Communist insurrection fomented by North Korea; to others it was a student riot; others doubted it ever happened Paul Courtright was there. He saw what happened. He felt duty-bound to reveal the truth. This book is his account.

미국 평화봉사단으로 한국에 파견되어 1979년부터 1981년까지 전남 나주의 나환자촌 에서 봉사 활동을 했다. 이후 열대성 질환과 안과 질환을 전공하고 공중보건 분야에서 석사와 박사학위를 받았다. 20년간 이집트, 에티오피아, 남아프리카 공화국, 탄자니아에서 근무했으며, 탄자니아 모시 지역에 아내 수잔 박사와 함께 킬리만자로 안과 센터를 설립해 운영하였다. 250개가 넘는 의학 논문을 게재하였으며 미국안과학회를 비롯해 실명 예방 분야에서 독보적인 업적을 이룬 사람에게 수여하는 다수의 상을 받았다. 남아프리카 공화국 케이프타운 대학 의대 겸임 교수이자 영국의 실명예방전문 NGO인 사이트 세이버(SightSavers)의 트라코마 예방 사업의 고문을 맡고 있으며 현재는 아내와 함께 미국 샌디에이고에서 살고 있다. 한국과는 1981년부터 깊은 관계를 이어 오고 있으며 여러 한국 연구자들과 공동연구를 진행한 바 있다. 2014년에는 국제보건 및 국제개발협력 전공자들을 대상으로 연세대학교에서 ‘현장 연구와 역학’ 단기 코스를 진행하였고, 그 외에도 수 차례의 특강 등을 통해 한국의 후학 양성에 많은 노력을 기울였다. 최근 아프리카에서의 트라코마 퇴치에 대한 공로를 인정받아 영국 여왕의 초대를 받기도 했다.
Paul Courtright was a US Peace Corps Volunteer in Jeonnam Province of Korea from 1979-81. He completed his Masters and Doctorate in Public Health focusing on eye diseases and neglected tropical diseases. For 20 years he lived and worked in Egypt, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Tanzania establishing, with his wife, the Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology in Moshi, Tanzania. He has published over 250 scientific articles and has received awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Premio Vision Mundi de Lucha Contra la Cuguera, and the Antonio Champalimaud Vision Award. He is a professor (adjunct) at the University of Cape Town and currently he is the Trachoma Technical Lead, consulting for Sightsavers, a UK based non-governmental organization. He is married with two sons and currently lives in San Diego. Since 1981 he had continued his relationship with Korea conducting research there with Korean colleagues and a summer epidemiology course at Yonsei University with his wife. His work in Africa has been recognized by the Queen and got invited to England.

전남대학교 사회학과를 졸업하고 미국 켄터키 대학교 사회학과 박사과정을 마쳤다. 1980년 광주항쟁 당시 항쟁의 기폭제 역할을 했던 전남대학교 총학생회에서 학술부장으로 활동했다. 이 때문에 광주항쟁 이후 체포되어 옥고를 치렀고, 뒤늦은 졸업 후 공공기관에서 30년간 근무 · 정년퇴직하였다. 국방부 5.18민주화운동 특별조사위원회 조사관을 역임하고, 지금은 5.18기념재단에서 연구위원으로 봉사하고 있으며, 주로 5.18 관련 해외기록물을 발굴하고 분석하는 일을 맡고 있다. “광주항쟁과 초국적 후원 네트워크”, “아르헨티나와 칠레의 이행기 정의 실천과 교훈,” “망각에서 기억으로, 그리고 어디로?: 브라질의 이행기 정의 실천과 교훈”, “카터 행정부의 대한정책 프레임 전환과 5.18민주화운동”, “미국의 주류언론에 투영된 광주항쟁: 비판적 검토” 등의 논문을 발표하였다.
