세계적인 중동 문제 전문가이자 팔레스타인계 미국인 역사학자. 1948년 미국 뉴욕에서 태어났고, 유엔에서 근무하던 아버지가 유엔한국통일부흥위원회 수석 총무(1962~1965)를 맡으면서 3년간 한국의 서울미국인고등학교에서 학창 시절을 보냈다. 1970년에 예일 대학교에서 학사 학위, 1974년 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 오스만 제국 시절부터 정치인, 판사, 외교관, 언론인 등을 배출한 팔레스타인의 명문 가문 할리디가(家) 출신으로, 대대로 가계 전체가 팔레스타인 역사의 현장에 있었다. 종고조부 유수프 디야 알할리디는 1870~1906년 사이 세 차례나 예루살렘 시장을 지냈고, 큰아버지 후세인 알할리디 역시 예루살렘 시장(1934~1937)을 역임했다. 저자 본인도 1967년 전쟁 당시 휴전을 교섭하던 유엔 회의장에 아버지와 함께 있었고, 1992년에는 오슬로 회담의 일환으로 진행된 워싱턴 교섭에 고문으로 참여하기도 했다. 현재 뉴욕 컬럼비아 대학교 현대 아랍 연구 담당 에드워드 사이드 교수Edward Said Professor로 재직 중이며 『팔레스타인 연구 저널Journal of Palestine Studies』 공동 편집인이다. 『팔레스타인의 정체성Palestine Identity』, 『기만하는 브로커들Brokers of Deceit』, 『쇠우리Iron Cage』 등 7권의 저서가 있고, 『뉴욕 타임스』, 『보스턴 글로브 』 등 유력 매체와 여러 학술 저널에 글을 쓰고 있다.
