• 이 책은 2009년 2월 출간된 <우리 문화의 뿌리를 찾아서> 시리즈 26번째 책, 『한국의 고전 시가』의 영어판이다. 노래의 기록이 나타나는 기원전 1~2세기부터 시작하여 19세기까지 약 2천여 년 동안 전해져 내려온 한국의 시가를 시대별로 살펴본다. 멀리 상고 시가로부터 신라의 향가, 고려 시가, 조선 시대의 악장과 시조 및 가사, 그리고 근대의 잡가에 이르기까지 각 시대마다 유행했던 노래가 담고 있는 의미뿐 아니라 그 노래가 탄생하게 된 시대적 · 사회적 배경을 전체적으로 조망하고 있다. 이 책은 그동안 주로 학문적 관점에서 연구되었던 한국의 고전시가를 인간과 삶을 이해하는데 초점을 맞추어 기술한 것이 특징이다. 한국의 옛 노래를 당시 사람들의 삶과 연관시켜 고찰함으로써 노래를 통해 알 수 있는 그 시대 사람들의 생활 모습은 어떠했는지, 나아가 우리의 삶에서 노래란 어떤 의미가 있는지를 보여주고 있다. 특히 노래에 담긴 옛 사람들의 ‘마음’을 보여주는 데 중점을 두고 집필했다는 저자의 의도에 따라 사랑과 그리움, 인생의 희로애락 등 시대를 초월한 사람의 감정을 적절하게 그려낸 시가들을 소개함으로써, 시대와 상황에 따라 시가의 형식은 끊임없이 변화해왔지만 사람은 언제나 마음을 노래한다는 평범하면서도 영원한 진리를 다시 한 번 확인시켜준다. Classical Poetic Songs of Korea is a chronological study of the diverse styles of songs sung by Koreans for some 2,000 years, from the 1st-2nd century B.C. through the 19th century. They include simple songs of the early ancient period, native songs (hyangga) of Silla, the lyrical songs (siga) of Goryeo, and hymns for state events (akjang) and three-line poems (sijo) as well as the long vernacular verse (gasa) and folk songs (japga) of the Joseon period. The book introduces important songs representing all these styles and describes the social environment and lifestyle of different eras that gave birth to Korea’s rich legacy of poetic songs. Beyond the traditional academic boundaries, the author looks into the meaning of these songs with focus on the social and cultural ambience, universal human dreams and desires that shroud them. Written by Kim Dae-haeng and translated by Lee Kyong-hee, this is the 26th volume of "The Spirit of Korean Cultural Roots," an ambitious bilingual project of the Ewha Womans University Press to explore major streams of Korean culture for readers around the world.

• 서울대학교 사범대학 국어교육과를 졸업하고 동 대학원 국어국문학과에서 문학석사와 문학박사학위를 받았다. 이화여자대학교 인문대학 국어국문학과 교수를 거쳐 서울대학교 사범대학 국어교육과 교수로 재직하였고(1989~2008), 현재 동 대학교 국어교육과 명예교수이다.
  한국판소리학회 · 한국고전문학회 · 한국구비문학회 · 한국문학교육학회 회장 및 국어국문학회 대표이사를 역임하였고, 현재 한국웃음문화학회 회장으로 일하고 있다.

• Lee Kyong-hee holds a degree in English from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. She has had a long career as a journalist for English-language newspapers in Korea, starting as a cultural reporter for The Korea Times and later as managing editor and editor-in-chief of The Korea Herald. She is currently editor of the Korea Focus news magazine, and various arts and culture publications. She has authored two books, Korean Culture: Legacies and Lore (1993) and World Heritage in Korea (1998), and a number of translations, including Royal Costumes of the Late Joseon Period (1986), Royal Ancestral Shrine of the Joseon Dynasty (1998), Korean Travel Literature (2006), Buddhism: Religion in Korea (2007), and Women in Korean History (2008).
