The Train Passed By: Stills starts with director Kam Jeong-won's first feature-length independent film, The Train Passed By. Hee-su, a young female worker, works at a dyeing complex in Daegu. Hee-su's night and day are always filled with the air of the industrial complex. Her boyfriend Hak-seon and her co-workers who work in the same industrial complex give her a little bit of strength and comfort. Hee-soo dreams of traveling to a distant place with Hak-seon even in the dull life of the industrial complex. However, even this trip is postponed without an appointment. In the end, Hee-su embarks on a journey alone. The place she chose is Mukho Port in Gangwon-do, which is exceptionally difficult to reach from Daegu. Hee-soo continues to work in a place where there is no industrial air, noise, or dark light. There, she looks back on her life while meeting new people. Hak-seon belatedly follows Hee-su on a trip, but he fails to meet her.
The Train Passed By: Stills is the result of reinterpreting the movie The Train Passed By in the language of a book. There are two time zones in the movie, but the book adds another one. A total of three time zones traverse the book from top to bottom and retell the movie. One from Hee-su's point of view, another from Hak-seon's point of view, and another from both of them. The time of the past and the present, which flowed while being segmented in the movie, and the space of Daegu and Mukho Port are sequentially arranged in the book. For the audience, who must have been confused by the tangled times in the movie, the book rearranges and shows the time the characters in the movie walked through. The Train Passed By, the feature film debut of director Kam Jeong-won, is a film in which the feeling of ¡°nighttime¡± steadily builds. It is like the delicate facial expressions of the character of Heesu: largely wordless, yet the slightest hint of a smile seems bright enough to light up the world, while the slightest frown gives the sense that everything that has been holding her up might soon give way. Train is a quiet film that does not readily express what is happening inside, and at the heart of it is the intent face of actor Gong Min-jeung, the subtle moods of the nighttime, and the character Hee-su¡¯s deep slumber-along with the final journey that soon awaits her. Without any sort of artifice, Kam guides us along. As we follow, we are hesitant to call what unfolds a ¡°fantasy.¡±
Maybe it is that fact that throughout her lifetime, Hee-su has been a dedicated worker, and she remains a worker even on the journey that comes after her death. Maybe it is because more intimate emotions are conveyed by the people she meets in Mukho amid the periodic sounds of the trains and the waves - the el... derly woman, another middle-aged woman, the sashimi restaurant owner, and a middle school girl - and by the faint echoes of the sunshine and sunsets and the warmth of the darkness that she shares with them than are expressed by her own clear gaze. Maybe it is the similarity between Hee-su¡¯s gaze and that of her lover Hakseon, who arrives only belatedly. While the film deliberately spins them together into skeins, the book divides them across three spaces. Since the time is ¡°resolved¡± in this way, it may be fair to regard the book as an interpretation of the film. As director Kam Jeong-won hoped, it can also be enjoyed on its own as a photographic collection. Book designer Richard Hollis, who created the book for the film, said, ¡°No book can be that film.¡± The film and the book operate according to different times, he explained.
